Pool Deck Coating

The surface everyone walks on barefoot — wet, in flip-flops, sometimes in Michigan November. It needs to be safe. And it needs to hold up.

Why pool decks need more than regular paint

Bare concrete around a pool is a problem waiting to happen. It absorbs water, gets slippery when wet, cracks under freeze-thaw stress, and stains from chlorine splash and bare feet. Most people don't realize the surface can be properly coated until someone slips or they're staring at a cracked deck.

A pool deck coating is formulated specifically for this environment — UV-stable so it doesn't fade in the sun, moisture-tolerant, and applied with a non-slip additive mixed directly into the topcoat. That last part is the most important thing on this job.

What the non-slip additive actually is: Fine silica or polymer beads blended into the coating before it goes on. You can't see it when the job is dry — the surface looks like a clean, coated deck — but the traction difference under wet feet is real and significant. This isn't the stuff you sprinkle on top after the fact. It's mixed in so it lasts for the life of the coating.

What's included

Non-slip additive

Mixed into the topcoat — not sprinkled on after. Part of the coating itself, so it doesn't wear or wash off with the seasons.

Freeze-thaw protection

Seals the surface pores so Michigan winters can't force water into cracks and expand them. Your deck ages a lot slower.

Color options

Standard is light gray or sand — colors that stay cool in summer sun. I'll show you what works with your pool surround and house.

Crack & spall prep

Surface cracks and pitting get filled before coating. You can't coat over damage and expect it to hold — prep is the whole job.

How it works

1

Pressure wash & degrease

The entire deck surface gets thoroughly cleaned. Mildew, algae, and chlorine residue have to come off completely before anything else happens.

2

Fill cracks & etch

Surface cracks get filled with a flexible filler. Then the concrete gets acid-etched so the coating bonds — adhesion is everything on a surface taking constant foot traffic.

3

Primer coat

Primer seals the concrete and gives the topcoat something solid to grip. Skipping this is why cheap deck jobs peel after two seasons.

4

Topcoat with non-slip additive

Non-slip additive goes into the coating mix, then applied in one or two coats. Typical cure time is 24–48 hours before foot traffic resumes.
